Business and Investing

People make business and investing applications when they want to work for themselves, or set up a company, or a branch of a company based overseas, in the UK. If you want to work for UK employers, see our information on working in the UK and on the Highly Skilled Migrant Programme (HSMP), which allows people to undertake a combination of employment and self-employment

Business and investing applications are made by a wide range of people with very different circumstances and needs, for example representatives of multi-national companies, people starting up new companies, business people and self-employed lawyers, writers, composers and artists. As a consequence, there are many different types of possible application.

Permission to come to the UK in one of these categories will initially be granted for a limited period. In some categories it is not possible to extend this period. In others, you can apply to extend your stay and in some cases, when you have been in the UK for long enough you can apply for settlement (Indefinite Leave to Remain – ILR) in the UK. Different categories have different rules about when you can apply to switch to another immigration category, whether it be another type of work or something altogether different, such as studying.
