A Fiancé(e) or Proposed Civil Partner visa is a UK immigration category which allows a British citizen or a settled person (i.e. someone who has indefinite leave to remain in the UK) to be joined by their fiancé(e) or proposed civil partner in order to marry or enter into a civil partnership in the UK.
For you to qualify for a visa as the fiancé(e) or proposed civil partner of a British citizen or settled person, you must be able to demonstrate the following:
In most cases, you must demonstrate that your partner has an annual income of at least £18,600, or that you and/or your partner have savings of at least £62,500. It is also possible, in certain circumstances, to combine income with savings.
Additional rules apply where your partner is relying on income generated in a self-employed capacity.
Applications must normally be made in your country of nationality or residence. You are not able to apply to switch into the Fiancé(e) or Proposed Civil Partner visa category from within the UK.
If your application is approved, you will be issued with a Fiancé(e) or a Proposed Civil Partner visa which will be valid for six months.
You will be expected to marry or enter into a civil partnership within the validity period of your visa. After you have married or entered into a civil partnership, you will be able to apply to switch into the Spouse category, provided the application is made within the validity period of your visa.
If you were unable to marry or enter into a civil partnership during the validity period of your visa, you may be able to apply to extend your visa for a further six months. You will need to provide a good reason why the marriage or civil partnership ceremony did not take place and evidence that it will take place within the next six months.
These visa holders are not permitted to work in the UK. You will need to switch into the Spouse category before you are able to work in the UK.
Time spent in the UK on a Fiancé(e) or Proposed Civil Partner visa does not count towards settlement in the UK. Only once you have been granted leave under the Spouse category will time begin to accrue towards settlement.
For this reason, it is normally in your interests to switch into the Spouse category at the earliest opportunity.
