The Official Journal of the EU today, on 5 March 2016, confirmed that the Council of the EU has extended restrictive measures against 16 individuals including the former President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych and members of his government.

The sanctions will now stay in place until 6 March 2017.

Council Implementing Regulation (EU) 2016/311 can be found here.

Council Decision (CFSP) 2016/318 can be found here.

These sanctions relate to the alleged misappropriation of state assets. A separate sanctions regime was imposed in response to the annexation of Crimea.

The measures were first imposed in March 2014 and impose asset freezes across the EU. Several listed individuals have already secured the annulment of earlier iterations of these measures. For example see the case of Klyuyev v The Council of the EU T-341/14 here in which Gherson acted.

These renewed sanctions will remain the subject of legal challenge at the General Court of the EU. Gherson currently acts for 25% of the individuals subject to these sanctions.
