It comes as a surprise to many applying for indefinite leave to remain in the UK or for naturalisation as a British citizen that they do not meet the "good character" requirement and therefore potentially face their applications being refused or deferred. This is often because they have an unspent conviction. There have been a number of high-profile cases recently concerning British soldiers from Commonwealth countries or elsewhere who have been in breach of the good character requirements... Read more »

As the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats approach the halfway point of their term in office, many of their pledges on immigration have been broken or forgotten. There has been little progress on the policies outlined in section 17 of the Coalition's programme for government. Ideas supposedly shared by the coalition partners have been quietly abandoned to be replaced with ideas announced in Conservative manifestos and party conferences. Earlier this month Halifax published a series of gloomy figures which further diminished confidence in the UK housing market. A combination of reluctant sellers and nervous buyers has resulted in stagnation. Low and fragile consumer confidence, muted earning growth... Read more »

For non-EEA students wishing to study in the UK, the UK is proving itself an inhospitable host. The UKBA's revocation of London Metropolitan University's sponsor licence , leaving thousands of foreign students to face deportation, was just one instance in what seems an emerging pattern of cynical disregard of non-EEA students. To add insult to injury, last week hordes of foreign students were forced to queue for hours outside the Overseas Visitors Records Office (OVRO), subjected... Read more »

Following a spate of work for Chinese clients we thought a short piece celebrating the Chinese autumnal festivals was appropriate as light relief from the legal discussions. Autumn is traditionally the time for festivals and celebrations. As the summer comes to an end, this is hopefully the time for bountiful harvests and a chance to celebrate a hard summer’s work. The Chinese culture is no exception. We have just passed the Mid-Autumn Festival (zhōngqiū jié) which... Read more »
